With no relatives to take him in and searching for the love and sense of belonging he had never received, David soon found himself falling in with the wrong crowd. Before long, he had joined his newfound friends in committing petty thefts.

That’s Cesar Escuro, San Diego County’s top probation official.
And those shoulders he’s referring to? They belong to his parents, two hardworking Filipinos who, along with Mr. Escuro’s colleagues and friends, helped to guide him on his life journey.
Pretrial Program Highlight: Sonoma County Probation
Fred (not using his real name for privacy) had been having many challenges. He was repeatedly in and out of jail for drug use and property crimes. During multiple incarcerations he talked about changing his life and quitting drugs to reunite with his kids, as he had lost custody of his children due to meth use.
Earlier this year, following another arrest, he was released as a part of a Pretrial pilot program under the care and supervision of the Sonoma County Probation Department.

The San Bernardino County Probation day reporting centers offer justice-involved individuals many resources to help transition them back into the community in a positive way. These programs include evidence-based rehabilitation programs, education and workforce development.
Fresno County Probation commemorates Crime Victims Rights Week
National Crime Victims’ Right Week (NCVRW) is an annual commemoration that promotes victims’ rights and services.
Each year, communities across the country revisit the history of the victims’ rights movement, celebrate the progress made, and recommit to further advancements in the crime victims field.
NCVRW helps to raise awareness of victims’ rights and services, highlighting programs, celebrating progress achieved, and honoring victims and the professionals who serve them. The 2021 NCVRW theme- Support Victims, Build Trust, Engage Communities.

California Probation officers are diverse and highly educated professionals with over 72% of probation officers identifying as non-white, and 51% are women, the majority have four-year degrees, and over half of probation departments have employed former system-involved individuals.
California Probation is educated and trained to help protect communities by carefully balancing justice-involved individuals’ need for accountability along with their need for the help and hope required to safely leave the justice system permanently.

ICYMI: Youth Detention Facility finds culture of kindness more effective than punishment

When a young person enters the de-escalation room in the Sacramento County Youth Detention Facility, they’ll find dimmed lights, bottles of lavender, orange and other essential oils, an audio menu featuring the rush of ocean waves and other calming sounds, along with squeeze balls, TheraPutty, jigsaw puzzles, and an exercise ball to bounce on.

On March 25, 2021, the Santa Barbara County Probation Department conducted county-wide wellness checks on active Probation and Post Release Community Supervision clients. The operation specifically focused on probationers where it was determined there were children, victims, or vulnerable adults in the home.

ICYMI: New Adult Drug Treatment Program Approved In San Diego County
From Patch.
County supervisors Tuesday unanimously approved the launch of a residential drug and alcohol treatment program to help adults re-enter society and keep them out of jail.
The county will now put the program, to be run by the Probation Department, out for bid.

ICYMI: Marin drug court gets $500K to aid defendants

A new $500,000 grant from the federal Bureau of Justice Assistance will enable Marin County to provide additional assistance to defendants in drug court.
The three-year grant will help pay for additional beds in sober living environments and a part-time recovery coach to connect participants with other services.
