Domestic Violence Core Training For Probation Officers – May 2025
Probation Officers who supervise individuals convicted of domestic violence offenses encounter issues that are not common in other types of supervision caseloads. For example, these Probation Officers interact more with victims, work directly with Batterer Intervention Programs, and need to understand the unique dynamics of interpersonal relationship violence. This two-day (16 hour) intensive, highly interactive, victim-centered trauma-informed core training is specifically designed to enhance the knowledge and skills of Probation Officers responsible for the supervision of individuals convicted of domestic violence, dating violence, and stalking. Topics include: understanding victim and offender profiles and behavior; victim-blaming; history of trauma and abuse; power and control issues; legal role and authority of probation; restraining orders; domestic violence courts; supervision techniques, including awareness about LGBTQ issues; risk assessments; investigation issues; the expectations and requirements of Batterer Intervention Programs; evidence-based interventions and fidelity; data collection; and secondary trauma and toxic stress.
Target Audience: This course is designed for Probation Officers responsible for the supervision of individuals convicted of domestic violence, dating violence and stalking court case.

SB 823 Training: Secure Youth Treatment Facility (SYTF) as a WIC 707(b) Disposition Option – May 2025
This two-and-a-half-day course provides an in-depth review of the statutory requirements and emerging best practices for juvenile probation staff working with youth committed to, or who are eligible to be committed to, a Secure Youth Treatment Facility (SYTF) by the court as a disposition for a Welfare and Institutions Code (WIC) 707(b) offense. The course content includes a brief history of SB 823 and SB 92, how to recommend a SYTF disposition and factors that go into that recommendation, how to establish the baseline term, determining age of jurisdiction, preparing to testify in court, creating the Individual Rehabilitation Plan (IRP), preparing for progress review hearings, when and how to recommend stepping down to a Less Restrictive Program (LRP), and preparing for the discharge hearing.
Target Audience: The course is designed for juvenile probation staff who have direct case management or court related responsibilities for youth eligible or committed to SYTF. The course is most applicable for juvenile probation court intake/investigation officers and field probation officers who work directly with youth committed to SYTFs. It is recommended that staff have been in their position for at least two to four months to get the most out of the training

Adult Court Report Writing for Probation – Live Webinar Training
This 2-day virtual course provides an overview of adult court writing for new probation officers or experienced probation officers transitioning into an adult investigations assignment. It is also useful for probation managers seeking a deeper understanding of adult report writing procedures, best practices, and current adult sentencing mandates, which changed in recent years. Content includes probation’s investigative expectations defined in the Penal Code and Rules of Court, evidence-based practices guiding sentencing recommendations, dispositional options, information gathering and interviews, and basic determinate sentencing. Active student participation is critical and all students will be expected to engage, despite the remote-learning environment.

Foster Care Training: Identifying Family Connections and Building Support Networks for Youth- Sacramento
In-Person
The Continuum of Care Reform has increased the need for California’s juvenile probation departments to find ways to meaningfully engage immediate and extended family members in helping youth to succeed on probation. This eight-hour training is designed for line staff, supervisors, and managers interested in learning new family finding strategies and techniques for locating and effectively engaging family and involving them in case planning activities to benefit the youth. The goal of engagement is to ensure these family members play a supportive role in the youth’s life, regardless of where the youth resides. The training will help staff and supervisors develop approaches to integrate this work into their daily activities of case management without becoming an extra burden.

Foster Care Training: Child and Family Team Meetings: Facilitation Training – Sacramento County
In-Person
This 3-day in-person training provides participants with the basic knowledge and skills to facilitate a Child and Family Team (CFT) meeting. Utilizing the Integrated Core Practice Model (ICPM) as the foundational guide for CFT meeting facilitators, trainees will learn: 1) key elements of team meetings for safety and case planning 2) procedural basics of team meeting facilitation 3) the role and skills needed to be an effective CFT facilitator 4) structured problem-solving and solution-focused dialogue within team meetings. Although probation is not required to complete the Child and Adolescent Needs and Strengths (CANS), probations’ involvement of sharing and receiving foster youths’ information from the CANS are crucial components in assisting in the safety, permanency, and well-being of foster youth. This course will provide an overview of CANS and cover the main areas that are applicable to probation.

The trauma-informed framework, based on the public health model, sets the stage for a safe, effective, and job-related investigation into the professional self at work. In the first half of the presentation, attendees will learn how to understand self-care as a skill developed in early childhood and that can be learned in later life. The second half looks at the workplace and the environment needed for employees to be able to care for their needs at work. A specific review of the literature related to probation officers will highlight the research and best practices.

Project Management in Probation – Tulare 2025

This three-day course will focus on the concepts of Project Management to include an in-depth review of strategies designed to implement projects effectively. The training will be based on a combination of discussion, lecture, and group exercises. Topics covered in the training include identifying characteristics of a successful project manager, developing a project charter, reviewing the nine knowledge areas of Project Management, and the communication plan used to ensure that stakeholders are aware of the nature of the project.
