Chief Probation Officers of California Foundation and California Department of Social Services Host Screening of Jetro’s Journey Documentary and Panel Discussion

The film showcases the positive impact of the support and care provided to a Jetro – a supervised foster youth – by his resource family and Sacramento County Probation

Sacramento, Calif., May 25, 2023 – In honor of Foster Care Awareness Month, the Chief Probation Officers of California Foundation (CPOCF) and the California Department of Social Services (CDSS) held a special screening and panel discussion of the documentary Jetro’s Journey which showcases the transformative power that support and care have on foster youth who are served by probation departments across California.

Jetro’s Journey intimately chronicles the inspiring story of Jetro, a young man on probation and in foster care with the Sacramento County Probation Department. The documentary highlights the profound impact Jetro’s resource family has had on his journey towards finding a better life path along with the support and resources provided by the Sacramento County Probation Department.

Chief Brian Richart, El Dorado County Probation, emphasized the impact of Jetro’s story as well as Probation’s goal in co-hosting this event, “There are other Jetro’s out there and the goal is for this film to help probation in their efforts to attract and encourage other supporting, positive adults consider being a resource parent. We hope this documentary will encourage others to follow in the footsteps of the Gaines’, knowing that they are not going on this journey alone but as part of a partnership with probation, foster family agencies, and other support systems.”

The screening was followed by an in-depth panel discussion moderated by Rosie McCool, Deputy Director of CPOC. Panelists were Hillary and Kevin Gaines, Jetro’s Resource Parents; Chief Marlon Yarber, Sacramento County Probation; Anthony Maze, Senior Deputy Probation Officer, Sacramento County Probation; and Frazer Bradshaw, Producer and Director of Photography. During the discussion, panelists delved deeper into the issues faced by foster youth in probation and highlighted the collaborative efforts provided to them.

Rosie McCool, Deputy Director of CPOC, remarked, “Jetro’s story serves as a powerful testament to the resilience and potential of foster youth within the probation system. We are steadfastly committed to ensuring that every young person, like Jetro, receives the support and care they deserve. We hope this documentary breaks down barriers, demystifies what it is to support and work with youth on probation and in foster care, and helps further probation’s efforts to affect positive change for our communities.”
