Marin County, CA – February 24, 2025 – The Marin County Probation Department proudly recognized 17 individuals who successfully transformed their lives after being on supervised probation. The honorees were celebrated at the annual Wall of Change ceremony, an event that began in 2011 as a small, intimate gathering and has since grown into a significant ceremony.
…During the event, two honorees, Seena Aguilar and Mohammed Majdoubi, shared powerful testimonies about their personal journeys.
Sena Aguilar, standing at the podium, invited her fellow honorees to stand beside her in solidarity, emphasizing that the moment belonged to all of them. She shared her story of growing up in an environment affected by alcoholism and addiction, experiencing trauma that led to instability.
“I came to the realization that I was powerless against alcohol and that my life was unmanageable,” she said.
“It was time to change, and that change began with the justice system. I saw it as an opportunity, not a punishment. With the right resources, and the support of my probation officer, recovery coach, and therapist, I was able to rebuild my life. Today, I am two years sober.”
Majdoubi, originally from Morocco, earned a Ph.D. in neuroscience and pharmacology and spent three decades as a research scientist and tenured university professor in the United States. However, after his divorce, he turned to alcohol, ultimately losing his career, freedom, family, and home.
“Rather than serving my full sentence in jail, I was given the opportunity to enter residential treatment at Center Point,” Maidoubi said.
“That was the day my recovery began. Through months of committed participation, I graduated from the program and became an active member of the Center Point Alumni Association. From there, I moved into a sober living facility, where I maintained complete abstinence.”
…
The event on February 19 brought together county leaders, community members, family, friends, and Deputy Probation Officers who had nominated individuals with prior involvement in the criminal legal system. More than just a moment of recognition, the ceremony symbolized appreciation for the resilience, dedication, and hard work it takes to overcome challenges and embrace a positive future.
….
The Probation Department remains committed to serving individuals with prior involvement in the criminal legal system by ensuring they receive the resources and support needed to reintegrate into the community successfully. As the ceremony concluded, Chief Marlon Washington and Honorable Judge Mark Talamantes presented the honorees with certificates and custom plaques.
“To love who you are, you cannot hate your experiences. They shape you,” Washington said to close the ceremony. “Those experiences enhance your mind and body … and look where you are today. I am proud of each and every one of you.”
The Wall of Change ceremony continues to serve as a testament to resilience, growth, and the power of second chances.
