Chief Probation Officers of California Response to Governor’s January Budget Proposal
State Budget Proposal Which Recognizes Probation's Integral Role in Public Safety and Rehabilitation
Sacramento, California, January 10, 2025 – The
Chief Probation Officers of California (CPOC) is encouraged by
Governor Gavin Newsom’s proposed January budget which recognizes
“the significant role probation plays in maintaining public
safety and reducing prison admissions.” We remain cautiously
optimistic as details related to several mission-critical areas
are unknown and some areas such as support for Proposition 36
implementation have not been adequately addressed.
“We stand ready to collaborate with both the Legislature and
the Governor to further refine the budget proposal to best ensure
the needs of probation and the communities we serve are met,”
said CPOC President Chief Steve Jackson. “Our commitment is to
identify areas that are essential for deploying cost-efficient
and effective strategies to improve public safety while
addressing the individual behavior through enhanced supervision
and connecting to appropriate programs and services that foster
sustainable change.”
California Probation is dedicated to continuing its innovative,
evidence-based approaches that reduce risks, enhance public
safety, and transform lives. We are confident the Governor and
the Legislature share these same goals. The proposed budget
sets the table for all of us to identify the investments
necessary to equip probation departments to face enhanced
obligations, upcoming challenges, and fulfill their mission of
creating safer, healthier communities.
