Statement on LAO Report on Reorganization of the Division of Juvenile Justice
Following the release of the Legislative Analyst’s Office (LAO) report on the 2019-2020 Budget proposal of the Reorganization of the Division of Juvenile Justice, the Chief Probation Officers of California issued the following statement:
“The Legislative Analyst’s Office’s report poses important questions about the proposal to move the Department of Juvenile Justice to the Health and Human Services Agency. Any decisions about where youth sent to the state should be treated must consider the diversity of issues that go beyond health. Probation chiefs across the state are focused on evidence-based approaches that provide full wrap-around services which has resulted in driving down both arrest and incarceration rates to historic lows. We would hope the state would look to replicate the success we’ve seen with the youth in probation’s care. We look forward to continuing conversations about this proposal with a focus on what is best for impacted youth.”
