ICYMI: Humboldt County Probation Responds to a Pandemic
It was just days before the July Fourth weekend when Humboldt County Chief Probation Officer Shaun Brenneman got the official word: A handful of California state prison inmates were being released early as COVID-19 continued to tear through state facilities. The released inmates would arrive in a couple days, Brenneman was told, including one who’d tested positive for COVID and another who’d been exposed to the deadly virus.
Probation Services Week Highlight: Orange County Probation Celebrates First Young Adult Court Graduate
On June 26, 2020, Abraham became the first graduate from Orange County Probation’s Young Adult Court, a two-year program that gives first-time felons a second chance.
Orange County Superior Court Judge Maria D. Hernandez wiped clean Abraham’s slate – untethering him from the stain of past mistakes.
The inaugural class consisted of 25 students randomly selected from hundreds of men between the ages of 18 and 23. Those who complete the course are eligible to have their convictions reduced or dismissed.

Probation Chiefs Respond to Newly Released BSCC Data Showing Significant Decreases in Juvenile Detention Populations & Bookings
Juvenile Hall Population Decreased by Nearly One-Third Since February 23; Statewide Bookings Decreased by Nearly 55%
Sacramento, CA, April 27, 2020 – Since the COVID-19 pandemic, the Board of State and Community Corrections (BSCC) released new data tracking the significant decrease in statewide bookings of juveniles and average daily population inside juvenile halls. Beginning February 23, 2020 through April 12, 2020, the data revealed a drop of 29.67% of the juvenile hall population and a drop of 54.56% of statewide bookings.
